Its Not Just a Conference – But a Celebration!

It’s almost time for the 15th edition of Subex User Conference!  As we count down the weeks, days and (soon to be) hours, many are starting to plan their agenda for the week.

For those who are new to this extravaganza, the Subex User Conference is an annual gathering of telecom operators, technology partners, and Subexians dedicated to sharing first-hand knowledge and provide insights into Subex Products and Solutions, give an unbiased opinion about the performance of products and influence product roadmap and also discuss on some of the challenges faced by Telcos today. This is our 15th year uniting thought leaders who are at the forefront of the telecom industry for two days of informative sessions and networking opportunities. The conference is hosted on 24th & 25th of October in Grand Hotel Excelsior, Malta.

My team often say that this is the only time of the year that they see me working 😊. For me, this the most exciting time of the year and is more like getting prepared to host a carnival or a big fat wedding!   I am more than a little excited to kick off this year’s festivities and host our customers and partner delegates in beautiful Malta. We’ve got workshops, informative sessions, demos, and social events to help make this conference unforgettable.

Every year we carefully pick a theme for our event and align our sessions and speakers to the theme.  Digitalization is the most powerful driver of change. In addition to significant learning and networking experiences, we’ve set aside time to have a lot of fun at this year’s conference. We’re hosting two social events that will help you make new friends in the Subex User Network.

Here’s a quick rundown of a few things to look forward to at #SubexUC:

The Bucket List Life: What if we tell you that we have James Bond speaking at the event!!! Excited?? Well, even we are. This high energy, opening keynote session, will perfectly set the stage. Powerfully delivered by Kenyon Salo, who has been referred to as the ‘James Bond of Speaking.’

Technology Keynote Sessions: We’re bringing you the leaders who are at the forefront of the industry for this year’s technology keynote sessions. The Sessions: Some sessions will showcase what other users have accomplished with Subex Products & Solutions. Get tips, tricks, and ideas from your peer group, as well as Subex SMEs.

The Company Update & Roadmap: Get a preview of an inside look at our roadmap. Our CEO Mr. Vinod Kumar and Mr. Rohit Maheshwari – Head of Strategy & Products will walk you through the long-term vision of Subex and changes we’ll make to Subex products in the future.

The Social Events: All work and no play make for a very dull conference, and we don’t do dull. We are hosting a welcome reception for our delegates on 23rd October at the Grand Hotel Excelsior. Be prepared to come dressed in Subex Colors (Blue & Green). On 24th of October, after a full day of sessions join us on a Harbour Cruise and witness Malta’s living past and unwind with your peers and enjoy traditional Maltese hospitality and culinary delights.

It is our sincere hope that you share in our excitement for this year’s conference. We are geared up and more than excited to host you at this beautiful Island – Malta. Digitalisation: Mirroring Opportunities with Reality: A Quick Recap of the Subex User Conference 2017

As most of you would probably know, we recently concluded the 14th edition of the User Conference, which took place on the 24th-25th of October 2017, in the beautiful city of Zagreb in Croatia. This year’s User Conference followed the theme ‘‘Digitalisation: Mirroring Opportunities with Reality” and was presided by Mr. Dean Smith, Founder & CEO, Assuring Business and Mr. Carl Lyon, Managing Director, Perpetual Experience Limited. The keynote speakers for this year’s User Conference were Rohit Talwar, Futurist and CEO – Future Research, Dana Adams, Director of Security Services at Telus, Andreas Manolis, Head of Strategy & Risk, Group Revenue Assurance at BT Group, and Professor Paul J. Morrissey C.Eng., F.I.E.E., Global Ambassador of TM Forum. Also speaking at the event was Debra Shindler, Senior Director Revenue Assurance, T-Mobile, Laura Iglesias Febrero, Head of Cyber Security, Telefonica, and User Conference veteran Eric Priezkalns, Steering Committee Member, RAG Forum & Editor, CommsRisk.

To take a step back, in my opinion this year’s run up to the User Conference was just as exciting as the event itself, particularly in the conceptualization of the theme, I.e., Digitalisation: Mirroring Opportunities with Reality. Over the last few years, the terms ‘Digitalisation’ and ‘Digital Transformation’ have been the spotlight topic of discussion among telecom operators and taking these buzzwords from the realm of hype to the shop floor has been priority for telecom executives. And Subex has been playing an important role in this mission. Therefore, we felt that bringing this aspect into our theme will be helpful to our customer, and to us as well.

Through this theme, we were able to move the discourse from merely talking about a trend to actually breaking these terms down to their practical, and operational aspects. Operators today understand that while digital transformation needs to be integrated within their businesses, the challenges that they will have to face need to be braced, and having this within our theme for the User Conference would provide all, including operators, futurists, media and analysts, with an excellent platform to exchange knowledge and discuss about making the hype a reality.

And we feel we were successful in doing so. Moreover, to enforce the importance and our viewpoint around this theme, we also held interesting sessions around Analytics, IoT Security, Managed Services, and Subex’s core products and solutions including fraud management, revenue assurance, network asset management and partner management.

Another important aspect of the User Conference is that we launched our consulting practice at this event completing the most important cog in our wheel to make it a complete technology organization with products and solutions stacks getting complemented with our consulting offering.

Moving back to the event, we also held the next iteration of the Operator Excellence Awards this year, and I would like to take a moment on this platform to highlight the illustrious winners of the various categories of the same.

Innovation Category

The Award was presented to the most innovative initiative that has created a disruption in the market in the given domain.

The operator best embodying these attributes was Reliance Jio, and Subex recognizes Reliance Jio’s industry innovation and disruption by conferring the Operator Excellence award in the “Innovation” category.

Trendsetter of the Year

This Award was given to the operator that has brought in the new approaches to solve industry problem which can be replicated by other operators.

The operator winning this award was “Optus” and Subex recognizes the new trend set by Optus for effective cost management strategy conferring the Operator Excellence award in the “Trendsetter” category.

 

Thought Leadership

The award was given to the operator that has been recognized to be driving industry thought leadership and its futuristic vision.

The operator which successfully highlighted these aspects in the year was “BT” and Subex recognizes the thought leadership showcased by BT in the industry, conferring the Operator Excellence award in the “Thought leadership” category.

 

Most Innovative Partner

The award was given to the partner that brings co-creation and innovation using Subex’s products.

The award for this category was provided to “Signa” and Subex recognizes their efforts of bringing in co-creation and innovation using an open platform over Subex’s products. This innovation and co-creation was indeed the first step towards an open platform which has made the Subex and Signa partnership much stronger.

One important thing which I would like to mention here is that Mr. Sandeep Kumar, India’s ambassador to Croatia graced the cocktail reception that we hosted on the eve of the Subex User Conference. This was a great gesture from Sandeep demonstrating the importance of government and industry working in cohesion for business to flourish.

Sandeep-Banga

Sandeep is responsible for Product Marketing of Subex’s Analytics portfolio. In addition to this role, he also looks after Public Relations and Analyst Relations for the company. He comes in with 9 years’ experience in the Marketing domain.

Making history in Prague

One of the most commonly used greeting, Dobrý den, means “Good Day” in Czech. Coincidentally, we at Subex believe this to be an apt indicator of things to come at the 12th Subex Annual User conference, happening in the magical city of Prague. In a city famous for its spectacular architecture and scenic beauty, we at Subex feel excited about the ground-breaking sessions planned for our esteemed guests.

In the past year we, both operators and partners, have seen the rise of new threats and hidden opportunities. We have seen margins getting further squeezed by the nimble tactics of OTT players, and conversely we have also seen some operators take bold new steps to capitalize new technologies. We have seen the magic of LTE establish the foundation of our collective next steps in the telecommunications industry, both in terms of defining the new business ecosystems which would evolve, as well as how and what services we would deliver. In a way, we are going back to basics – observe, study, understand and compete.

Following up on the success of the 2014 User conference, this year Subex is pulling out all the stops in terms of pushing the boundaries of innovation in business optimization. This time around, it’s going to be about looking to the future and preparing for agile transformation today. The day and age of “built to last” solutions might be seeing it’s official sunset. A new era is upon is – The era of “built to change” solutions. When operators are grappling with the vast product possibilities now open to them, it becomes of paramount importance that associated risks can be handled at the pace of business. My good friend Eric Priezkalns, Co-founder at Commsrisk returns this year as the event’s chairman . Last year his ability to bring the speaker and the audience closer together in meaningful discussion (and debate) ensured that all of us took away the best from all the sessions. Beyond the speaking participants, we have a full roster of industry leaders and active voices in the risk & assurance community like Amit Agrawal (Group Director, RAFM at Etisalat), Edward Granillo (Director, TeliaSonera Group-wide RAFM), Pedro Bravo (Revenue Assurance and Credit Scoring Manager at NOS), Ahmed Saleh Benatif (Director of RA at STC) and the list just goes on. In such a rich gathering of domain experts, I for one would expect something fantastic to emerge from the planned sessions. The sessions themselves are keyed towards focused discussions around emerging technologies, evolving risk frameworks and a little bit of magic (by yours truly).

In keeping with the theme of Prague, Subex also plans to spring a few pleasant surprises for our esteemed customers. Rest assured, we are confident that this would be a User Conference that won’t be soon forgotten. We are looking forward to breaking new ground, and jointly going where no risk management expert has gone before!

Ashwin joined Subex in 2006 as a part of the Implementation team for Revenue Assurance & Fraud Management. Over the years he has worked with cross-geographical teams to drive value discovery and creation for telecom operators across Middle East, Africa and APAC as a delivery SME and a Business Solutions Consultanct. Beyond his work in Subex, he has been involved in some of the most seminal Revenue Assurance public domain centers (both in terms of his work on popular RA blogs as well as his co-authored work on Revenue Assurance for Telecom Operators).
